End effects for highly elastic-constant viscosity fluids

In the light of a new interpretation, we have studied the end effects for highly elastic-constant viscosity fluids commonly called Boger fluids. In terms of entrance effect only, the presence of primary normal-stress differences in absence of shear-thinning properties results in a decrease of the entrance correction below the Couette (Newtonian) value, whereas the total end correction can be substantially increased by an amount which is strongly dependent on the Weissenberg number or recoverable shear.     

On the Discretization of Distributed-Parameter Systems with Quadratic and Cubic Nonlinearities

Approximate methods for analyzing the vibrations of an Euler--Bernoulli beam resting on a nonlinear elastic foundation are discussed. The cases of primary resonance ( _n ) and subharmonic resonance of order one-half ( 2 _n ), where is the excitation frequency and _n is the natural frequency of the nth mode of the beam, are investigated. Approximate solutions based on discretization via the Galerkin method are contrasted with direct application of the method of multiple scales to the governing partial-differential equation and boundary conditions. The amplitude and phase modulation equations show that single-mode discretization leads to erroneous qualitative as well as quantitative predictions. Regions of softening (hardening) behavior of the system, the spatial dependence of the response drift, and frequency-response curves are numerically evaluated and compared using both approaches.     

运动状态下液体轴对称抛撒首次破碎的实验研究

在实验室条件下利用组合式激波管设备,对运动状态下液体轴对称抛撒进行了实验研究。通过纹影装置获得其所形成雾化场的外形轮廓照片,测量获得了液核发生首次破碎的位置与对称轴之间的距离。通过对抛撒过程中R-T不稳定性与K-H不稳定性的分析认为,轴向气流作用下液体轴对称抛撒的首次破碎点与对称轴的距离主要由轴向气流的速度、轴向气流的密度、液体轴对称抛撒的出口速度、抛撒液体的表面张力系数、环形喷口的宽度等参数所决定。在此基础上,利用相似性理论和无量纲分析,获得了运动状态下液体轴对称抛撒首次破碎点与对称轴之间的距离与相关参数的无量纲关系式。     

Prenylated Benzene Metabolites from Melicope pteleifolia

Chemical investigation on the stem and root of Melicope pteleifolia afforded three new prenylated benzene metabolites as racemic mixtures, named pteleifolins A–C ( 1 – 3 , resp.). Their gross structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analysis, especially 2D‐NMR experiments. An enantiomer resolution of (±)‐ 1 using chiral HPLC was performed, and the absolute configuration of the enantiomers were determined to be (+)‐(S)‐ 1 and (?)‐(R)‐ 1 by means of circular‐dichroism analysis.     

Quasistationary distributions for one-dimensional diffusions with singular boundary points

In the present work we characterize the existence of quasistationary distributions for diffusions on $(0,\infty )$ allowing singular behavior at 0 and $\infty$. If absorption at 0 is certain, we show that there exists a quasistationary distribution as soon as the spectrum of the generator is strictly positive. This complements results of Cattiaux et al. (2009) and Kolb and Steinsaltz (2012) for 0 being a regular boundary point and extends results by Cattiaux et al. (2009) on singular diffusions.     

Liouville theorem for weighted p-Lichnerowicz equation on smooth metric measure space

In this paper, let $(M^n,g,d\mu )$ be n-dimensional noncompact metric measure space which satisfies Poincaré inequality with some Ricci curvature condition. We obtain a Liouville theorem for positive weak solutions to weighted p-Lichnerowicz equation

Automorphisms of flag systems

We first discuss the problems in the theory of ordinary differential equations that gave rise to the concept of a flag system and illustrate these with the Cartan criterion for Monge equations (1st order) as well as the Cartan statement concerning the local equivalence of Monge–Ampère type equations (2nd order). Next, we describe a prolongation functor operating on the infinitesimal symmetries (automorphisms) of the Darboux flag and extending these, isomorphically, to all the symmetries of any other flag. Hence, flag systems cannot be distinguished by their symmetry algebras and the local classification of these objects is approached by considering higher order isotropies of these algebras as well as the groupoids of k-th order formal equivalences since the differential equations defining the latter provide precious information for the application of flag systems to differential equations (e.g., Cartan's criterion for non-linear Monge equations). In examining the behavior of the isotropy algebras, that can either diminish or remain the same, when passing from a derived system $S_{\nu }$ to the consecutive system $S_{\nu +1}$, we obtain a full set of numerical invariants for the elementary flag systems that moreover specifies the local models.     

Liquid chromatography‐tandem mass spectrometry assay for the simultaneous determination of three major flavonoids and their glucuronidated metabolites in rats after oral administration of Artemisia annua L. extract at a therapeutic ultra‐low dose

The traditional antimalarial herb Artemisia annua L., from which artemisinin is isolated, is widely used in endemic regions. It has been suggested that artemisinin activity can be enhanced by flavonoids in A. annua; however, how fast and how long the flavonoids are present in the body remains unknown. In the present study, a rapid and sensitive liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry method was developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of three major flavonoids components, i.e. chrysosplenol D, chrysoplenetin, and artemetin and their glucuronidated metabolites in rats after oral administrations of A. annua extracts at a therapeutic ultra‐low dose. The concentration of the intact form was determined directly, and the concentration of the glucuronidated form was assayed in the form of flavonoids aglycones, after treatment with β‐glucuronidase/sulfatase. The method was linear in the range of 0.5–300.0 ng/mL for chrysoplenetin and artemetin, and 2–600 ng/mL for chrysosplenol D. All the validation data conformed to the acceptance requirements. The study revealed a significantly higher exposure of the flavonoid constituents in conjugated forms in rats, with only trace intact from. Multiple oral doses of A. annua extracts led to a decreased plasma concentration levels for three flavonoids.     

Regularity results of the thin obstacle problem for the p(x)-Laplacian

We study thin obstacle problems involving the energy functional with $p(x)$-growth. We prove higher integrability and Hölder regularity for the gradient of minimizers of the thin obstacle problems under the assumption that the variable exponent $p(x)$ is Hölder continuous.     

A new first-principles approach for the catenary

This paper reports on findings relating to catenaries since the publication in Expositiones Mathematicae of Denzler and Hinz’s pioneering 1999 paper, Catenaria Vera – the True Catenary. New governing differential equations and explicit solutions are derived for the catenary in positive and negative radial potentials with physical constants incorporated in the derivations. In keeping with precedent by Denzler and Hinz, a measure of historical perspective is offered as homage to Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz, Christiaan Huygens and Johann Bernoulli, the original first-solvers of the catenary.
